I’m astonished at the coincidences

I’m astonished at the coincidences I’ve just noticed with Parker Paul and Nad Navillus: They both have repeating initials (PP and NN), they’ve each released 2 great records on Jagjaguwar, and they both have excellent new records completed, that are sadly without homes at the moment. Also, they share the same drummer, Keith, and Keith has decided to do everyone a big favor and post some tracks from both new albums. What’s more, Keith has graciously given me the go-ahead to direct link the songs too!

I first heard Paul’s new one, Food Service, some time ago, and it’s crazy messed-up. In a good way. Paul’s prior albums have focused on his fractured, stream-of-consciousness, pie-anna ditties, to great effect, but on Food Service, there’s almost no piano present at all. Paul’s off-kilter crooning and songwriting sensibility remains, but it’s all mashed up with some kind of combination of nintendo, roller-rink organ, and 80’s synth. Crazy messed-up. In a good way. I think “Flytown” sounds like the theme song to an F’d-up Japanese cartoon.

I just heard Nad Navillus’ new record, All That They Know, for the first time today, and I’ve been listening to “Blood In Water Blooms” on repeat all morning. Dan used to be a player in Songs:Ohia, and that sound is the closest approximation I can think of as comparision, albeit Dan’s (Nad’s) stuff to me sounds a bit more layered, and, quite frankly, less “samey”. Check it:

Please feel free to redistribute these tracks at will. In an ideal world, someone with label connections somewhere will eventually hear ‘em, and both of these very deserving records can find ‘emselves a home.
