“He burns away the cynicism that’s been encrusted from countless lackluster troubadors…”
The Lord Dog Bird (Wilderness guitarist Colin McCann) is sitting onstage playing an acoustic guitar, rocking back and forth with his eyes squeezed shut, singing his heart and several other internal organs out.
We’ve all seen this type of thing hundreds of times… and we’ve become somewhat blasé about it in the 21st century. But this young man… imbues the ol’ singer/songwriter song and stance with so much intensity and sincerity that he burns away the cynicism that’s been encrusted from countless lackluster troubadours in coffeehouses and non-profit venues. He somehow moved even “seen most of it” old fucks… Most of the sparse Chop Suey crowd was riveted, too, in a manner unusual for 9 pm on a Monday.
Seattle’s Stranger, on last night’s performance by The Lord Dog Bird (the artist I tried terribly hard to get you all to listen to for most of last year).

for some reason i don’t think it even makes sense to talk about this record as a singer-songwriter or troubador or whatever kind of thing. i’m not sure why.
i got the album last year at your recommendation and was not immediately impressed with it. i liked it pretty well. i love his work in wilderness, and listened to this album a bit when i got it, but then kno(w)here came out, and i totally forgot about the lord dog bird. kno(w)here is my favorite wilderness album, primarily because of mccann’s backing/co-lead vocals on several tunes.
anyway, something about the lord dog bird album never stuck until just right now. i hadn’t listened to it since i got kno(w)here, and for some reason, this album makes so much more sense now. so thanks for posting about it again. well done.
