I was a little worried

I was a little worried - I’d heard some not-too-great
reviews, but the New Pornies were great last night.
Neko (though much smaller than expected) was really on,
and Carl (the Richie Cunningham of frontmen, god bless him) and the boys were
none-too-shabby either. I realized during the show that
the new album had finally sunken in, and I really,
really like it a lot. This is exactly the same thing that
happened to me with Mass Romantic. Anyhoo, get in there
while you can:

Jul 15   Cleveland, OH - Beachland Ballroom
Aug 21   Lawrence, KS - Bottleneck
Aug 23   Louisville, KY - Headliners
Aug 24   Pittsburgh, PA - Rosebud
Aug 25   New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
Aug 27   Carrboro, NC - Cat’s Cradle
Aug 28   Atlanta, GA - Echo Lounge
Aug 30   Houston, TX - Fat Cat’s
Aug 31   Austin, TX - Emo’s
Sept 01   Seattle, WA - Bumbershoot Festival

And from the Weekly-Vanderslice-News-Dept:

Oct 8   Dallas, TX - Gypsy Tea Room
Oct 25   Chicago, IL - The Abbey (Ticketweb)

Other dates will likely surface later this week.

Two EPs: The new 5-songer

The new 5-songer from Beauty Pill, is called
You Are Right To Be Afraid
. Four bucks at the Dischord Store.

:::Copyists.mp3:::

I find Young Liars by TV On The Radio kind of hard to describe,
but suffice to say I’m digging it immensely.

So some Insound mailer talked

So some Insound mailer talked
me into buying this new ltd-vinyl Recoys record.
The Recoys were apparently a band featuring Hamilton and Pete Walkmen,
and Hugh FrenchKicks.
Two of the songs featured, That’s the Punchline and The Blizzard of ‘93 were re-worked by the Walkies
for their last album, and the remaining songs all come from the Recoy’s never-released
full-length. I haven’t listened to the record yet, but there are mp3s available:

:::Shake Off Your Nerve:::
:::The Blizzard Of ‘93:::

Also, Insound is doing some kinda promotion where you get a few “Indie Rock Trading Cards” with
each order. If you somehow manage to collect all 21, you get a $20 gift certificate.
The cards feature bands like Ted Leo, Royal City, and the
Constantines
(whose new EP, Nighttime/Anytime drops on Subpop tomorrow).

JV’s back from tour and

JV’s back from tour and preparing to lay down tracks
for an upcoming JV/Mountain Goats split (plus also
featuring Franklin Bruno. Maybe that makes JV the
extra Extra Glenn). Vanderslice’ll be covering
“Baboon” from Coroner’s Gambit. Also,
there’s some permutation of Pale Horse’s
cover art up as JV’s splash page. It was designed
by Aesthetic Apparatus, who I was surprised to see
featured in Readymade this month (don’t even think
of breaking my balls about this. My girlfriend has
a subscription).

And I’m still waiting to see those JV/Beulah
tourdates for September, though realistically, I know not to hold my breath for a Columbus show.

Another band I knew I could count on to not show up in C-Town is The Walkmen.
They’ve got some East Coast-y dates in August, a coupla which
are with the French Kicks. I didn’t realize that was the
French Kicks playing with Casey in the video for “The 15th”, I just assumed it was a bunch of actor-types *pretending* to be
the French Kicks. Seriously.
