There were a bunch

There were a bunch of good new releases this week,
but this is also a good week to think about picking
up some new “old” stuff. First, Ryko has finally
released the Big Star Story, which features a great selection
of tracks, including “Hot Thing”, an all-new song by the
“modern” Big Star (Chilton and Jody plus Posies Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow).
Next, there’s the U.S. release of Teenage Fanclub’s 4766 Seconds collection, which
features 3 all-new songs:

The World’ll Be OK
Empty Space
Did I Say

And last but not least, DO NOT forget about Rhino’s Expanded and Remastered
Editions of Television’s Marquee Moon and Adventure. Marquee Moon
features 5 bonus tracks:

Little Johnny Jewel
See No Evil (alt)
Friction (alt)
Marquee Moon (alt)
Untitled Instrumental

and Adventure features three bonusees:

Adventure
Ain’t That Nothin’ (alt)
Glory (alt)

What’s more, Rhino Handmade is offering (in a limited edition of 5,000) a special
collector’s release of Television: Live At The Old Waldorf, San Francisco, 6/29/78

If you do not currently own at least Marquee Moon (and i shit you not, you really really should),
I would say that this is a hella good time to go pick it up.

This morning, over at Fluxblog,

This morning, over at Fluxblog, I downloaded this really out-of-character Can song. When I played it though, I just about crapped. I mean, who would have guessed that Parappa the Rapper was a fan of old-school Krautrock?

Cute lil’ Norweegie Sondre Lerche

Cute lil’ Norweegie Sondre Lerche has a new EP out,
called Don’t Be Shallow. It’s got four
studio tracks and four live tracks, which are all
acoustical and shit:

Don’t Be Shallow
I Know, I Know
Living Lounge
Single Hand Affairs
Dead Passengers (live)
You Know So Well (live)
Sleep On Needles (live)
Night And Day (C. Porter)(live)

I wholeheartedly agree with Insound’s assessment that Sondre is “equal parts Brian Wilson, Cole Porter and Marc Bolan”, but at the same time, the Astralwerks site is correct in pointing out
that he’s “somewhere between Donovan, Burt Bacharach, and David Cassidy”.

I saw local Columbus band The Last Hotel this weekend, and they were refreshingly good. It’s so rare to find an actual indie pop/rock band
’round these parts, what with all the Thin Lizzy/AC-DC type shit that prevails here. Their EP
features several good poprockers, and a number of quieter, Jeff Buckley-esque tracks. Here’s one of the poprockers:

:::Forgetting.mp3:::

From the Three Gut site comes news that
the EP that Royal City was working on has blossomed into a full-fledged album, tentatively entitled Little Heart’s Ease. Should be out around May of Aught-Four.

Also from the 3gut site comes news that 3gut is now the Canadian home of Oneida, whose new album (the follow-up to Each One, Teach One, a.k.a. LIGHT! LIGHT! LIGHT! LIGHT! LIGHT !LIGHT!), titled Secret Wars, drops in January.

:::Treasure Plane.mp3:::
:::Wild Horses.mp3:::

Additionally, Jagjaguwar is reporting that a 500-limited-edition vinyl of
Oneida’s Anthem On The Moon has just now been released by
Rocket Recordings.
Did I not tell you that this is the year of limited shit?

And finally, gaze upon the Aesthetic Apparatus-designed cover to Mr. Vanderslice’s forthcoming Cellar Door:

Those precious FOOKIN’ STOODENTS known

Those precious FOOKIN’ STOODENTS known as Belle & Sebastian will have a new
album, Dear Catastrophe Waitress, out next month. I had convinced
myself several years ago that I was *completely* burned out on B & S,
but surprisingly, I enjoyed the preview mp3 for Step Into My Office, Baby.

And everybody’s linking to this
high-larious new Onion bit
, which also reminded me of this
old gem
, which was a lot funnier back before nightclubs starting collapsing
and burning up in real life all the time.

On a related note, Fractured Discs
has set up the “Fractured Discs Distro Boutique”, and have made available, once again, the 2001 debut EP
from Maestro Echoplex. It’s an incredible disc, and has been very hard-to-find for some time now. Grab it while you can.

Murderer is a new

Murderer is a new Low EP out
this month. It’s on Cameron Crowe’s Vinyl label, which
is a vinyl label. Imagine that. Anyway, it’s apparently the second in a series; the first
release was from Red House Painter Mark Kozelek.

It all sounds intriguing, really:

Each EP has roughly 8-12 minutes per side, and has material exclusive to the series.
Each release is limited to 2000 copies worldwide. One-thousand copies are numbered on
black vinyl for distribution in the United States. Five-hundred copies are pressed on
colored vinyl for European distribution, and the final five-hundred copies are on clear
vinyl, to be sold in a boxed set once the series has run its course. Plans for the boxed
set include a poster, all 10-12 of the 10″ EPs in the series, and one 10″ exclusive to
the set. The boxed set is slated to be released in late 2004 or early 2005.

I officially name 2003 “The Year Of Limited-Edition Shit”.

Moving on, if you order Quasi’s new album Hot Shit via Touch and Go Mail Order,
you get a free special bonus disc, Live Shit. I assume this to be a live Quasi
disc and not that MuhTallica box set from years ago. Toll-free call, US only, @ 1-800-3-TOUCHU.

Speaking of deals, Sushirobo’s new album,
The Light-Fingered Feeling Of Sushirobo, comes out next week. You can buy it
for a mere $10, but the real deal is this one:
both of their previous albums, Drawings and Garbage Structures and Action Causes More Trouble Than Thought, for
only $12…that’s $6 apiece. Definitely worth it.

Finally, the D-Plan have most everything they’ve ever done available as
an audio stream now, and most things that aren’t streamable are downloadable. A People’s History of The Dismemberment Plan is out
on DeSoto on September 24th.

update 09/10: Confirmed, but limited to 250 copies. If you do pre-order, use code “echoes15″ to get the standard Insound 15% off. Also of note: Pitchfork today blew a hyperbole-laden moneyshot all over their copy of Echoes.
