I was pleasantly surprised the other day to find WFMU Crapola Central,
where they sell tons of WFMU stuff, including the WFMU live CD comps that I’d assumed were long since out-of-print, and
therefore impossible to get. Not so:

There’s a ton of other cool shit too, like trading cards, Shooby Taylor cassettes, &c.

And I was very saddened to learn that the Khyber Club, a true Halifax NS
institution, closed
its doors on January 15th
. It really was a great lil’ place, and I’ll never forget the graciousness of Khyber Craig, who
didn’t mind plopping down on the sofa and spending his whole afternoon swapping stories with the 3 random Yanks who just happened
to wander into the place one autumn afternoon. Happy trails, Craig; this one’s for you:

Check out a track

Check out a track from TVOTR’s
upcoming long-player, Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, out March 9th
on Touch & Go.

::: Dreams.mp3 :::

The SXSW artist music directories
that tim outed last
year (IIRC) are filling up with mp3s from this year’s bands. Grab ‘em
here. There’s
also an ogg directory
for all of you running BeOS on your 80 MHZ Pentiums (approximately 2 people
will get that joke).

Donewaiting is tracking the prelimary
SXSW schedule here
.

And everyone is reporting that Leroy Bach, only child of world-famous composer
Johann Sebastian Bach, half-brother to Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach, and
sixth-cousin of Daisy Duke, has left Wilco, who are in progress on album #5. As
Buddyhead says, “Wilco is in the studio
making their fifth record. You know that?s a prolly a real fucking party in there
with those guys. Booze, speed, pills, books, you name it those dudes are flying on it”.

The Fiery Furnaces, known

The Fiery Furnaces, known in some circles as “Rough Trade’s White Stripes”,
will release their next single “Tropical Ice-land” February 23rd (stateside).
It’s a re-recorded version of the album track; the white vinyl 7″ version
will features “Sweet Spots” on the flipside, whilst the CD version features
“We Got Back The Plague (SBN version)”, which you can actually download if you can be
bothered to sign up here.
Btw, you’ll also get access to mp3s of “I Lost My Dog (SBN version)”, “South Is Only A Home”,
and “Don’t Dance Her Down”.

Also, the Walkmen will be on Conan February 6th,
probably performing “The Rat”, their wisely-chosen first single from Bows and Arrows.

On May 4th, the Magnetic Fields will release their new album on Nonesuch Records. The album title is i. It will have 14 new Stephin Merritt recordings, all starting with the letter i. The songs are sung by Stephin and accompanied by the four-piece band, John Woo (banjo and guitar), Sam Davol (cello) and Claudia Gonson (piano and percussion). The band plans to tour select dates around the US during May, June and July, and will post dates when available.

Califone has a new record

Califone has a new record out this week, Heron King Blues. You can
listen to the track “Apple” over at the Billions website (quicktime format).

Meanwhile, over at the New Line site, you can check out the excellent “A Night At Star Castle”, from the Robbers On High Street’s upcoming Fine Lines EP.

Furthermore, how about 3 from the upcoming Destroyer record, Your Blues? (Courtesy of Merge, of course).

“Palmcorder Yajna”, the first single

Palmcorder Yajna“, the
first single from The Mountain Goats
We Shall All Be Healed (out February 2nd), is available for download over
at 4ad. Darnielle &c. are touring throughout
February, first with the Rosebuds, then with Manishevitz.

And while you’re over there at the 4ad site, you can also check out “Misery Is A Butterfly“, one
of the tracks from Blonde Redhead’s upcoming record, called, coincidentally, Misery Is A Butterfly. Fluxblog has
another track available, which you can snag if you’re quick about it.

The krauty drone of Oneida

The krauty drone of Oneida is probably not
for everyone, but I like ‘em. Their newest, Secret Wars, is out this week.

::: Wild Horses.mp3:::
::: Treasure Plane.mp3:::

There’ll also be a single release for “Caesar’s Column” out early next month,
featuring said track plus 4 remixes.

From tha blueprint comes word
that Johnny Rotten
will be appearing in a reality show
. He’ll be shoo-in for “Most Annoying Reality Show Personality 2004″.
Except, remember when he ripped on Dave Kendall about that “dead cat” he wore as a toup?

Certainly one of the most painful experiences of your life would be trying to slog
your way through the Modest Mouse BBS, but
nonetheless I present you, as always with a healthy grain of salt, the unofficial
tracklist for Good News For People Who Love Bad News, as posted by
someone usernamed “*ISAAC*BROCK*”:

jtb’s always a big advocate

jtb’s always a big advocate
of the KCRW site. What I never really
noticed before was that Morning Becomes Eclectic doesn’t just offer
audio, but MOVING PICTURES as well! Kids, this is just like
the “talkies” of yore, only instead of talking it’s music, plus
also it’s in color instead of black and white, and it appears
in a little RealPlayer window instead of on the screen at the
Bijou. Anyway, here are some links for some of the Morning
Becomes Eclectic performances from the past year:

Azure Ray
Belle & Sebastian
Ben Lee
Bright Eyes
Calexico
Cat Power
Earlimart
The Frames
Grandaddy
Interpol
Josh Rouse
My Morning Jacket
The Postal Service
Rufus Wainwright
The Shins
The Starlight Mints

Merge will release the new Destroyer
record, Your Blues, on March 9th. The early PR for it says:“it promises
to be a slight swerve away from the sprawling epic chamber rock of 2002’s This Night.
Early word from Merge tips Your Blues as a poetic mishmash of balls-out
rockers and intensely quiet creepers underpinned by an unabashedly theatrical air.”
In
any case, I’m sure it’ll be pretty swell. I love Bejar’s Hytchcockian vocal delivery.

And I just recently noticed that Parasol is
now offering 15% on
all new releases, which is pretty nice. Lots of places offer 10% off deals, but that’s like
a car dealer cutting you a deal by “waiving floor charges”. 15% off is like, actually REAL MONEY.
I ordered JV’s Cellar Door and diosLos Arboles, both
of which are dropping next Tuesday.

Also, the fascinating “Mingering Mike collection”. UPDATE: The original poster of the Mingering Mike thread over at Soulstrut got spooked for some reason and pulled down all the pics and stuff. (MetaFilter thread is here)
