I know it’s always easier

I know it’s always easier to answer the question “Who’s playing SXSW this year?” with
“Everyone.”, but let’s just play along. They have announced
a preliminary handful of acts, which includes: David Cross, The Delgados, The Fiery Furnaces, Junior Senior, Modest Mouse, N.E.R.D., Radio 4, The Sleepy Jackson, The Stills, TV on the Radio, and The Walkmen. As I mentioned yesterday, there’s also Britt, Sally Crewe, Joel RL Phelps, Silkworm, etc.
Expect the list of performers to grow exponentially over the next 2 months.*UPDATE*-There’s a full list here (yahoo group registration req’d)(via ToT).

A 2nd PSOI track has been
released by Matador: Caught In The Rain

And here’s John Darnielle’s holiday Mountain Goats track that I guess I missed ’round holiday-time: Stable Boy Song.

In non-music news, murmur pointed out that, holy shit,
Freaks and Geeks is actually getting the DVD treatment!
It’ll be out in April, but you should sign up now
if you want to order the special edition which will “contain all of the episodes
plus an eighty page yearbook filled with photos and fun stuff from the show, plus more extras than you
can imagine”.

I can’t believe this is really coming out. Now where the hell is the Pete & Pete Collection?

Barsuk is now taking preorders

Barsuk is now taking preorders for
Vanderslice’s Cellar Door. First
100 orders get a signed photo taken by JV. Also you can add a T-shirt to the order
for an extry 10 bucks. Apparently, there’s a big writeup on JV in this month’s Esquire.

You can also check out the new slideshow that JV has up, for the
new Spoon recording session
. I guess one of the songs on the new one must be
called “The Two Sides Of Monsieur Valentin“. Anyway, also, Britt’ll be opening (solo) for the Zombies’
Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent on February 22 at Antones, Austin,
and will also being playing solo at the SXSW 12xu showcase on March 20th, along with
all the other 12xu-ers (including Sally Crewe, whose new
record Shortly After Take-off is set for release in September).

Coupla months ago, jtb played

Coupla months ago, jtb played
some great songs for me, but as he was sworn to secrecy, he
couldn’t give me any info about them. Well, finally all has been revealed;
the band is Mason Dixon and
the songs are excellent. Go get ‘em.

March 9th will see the release of
The Bigger Lovers
‘ new record, This Affair Never Happened…And Here Are Eleven Songs About It. Though it won’t be out for a full two months, you can actually check out two o’ the tracks right now, courtesy of Yep Roc. Hot damn.

::: You, You, You :::
::: Ninja Suit :::

Shins bumped from Letterman(got called back, I guess). Plus also, you can now download the mp3 for Kissing The Lipless (which I don’t think you could do before. Maybe.)

Fans of the more esoteric early-80s Georgia janglepop may be interested to know that Rhino Handmade has recently made available a deluxe edition of Guadalcanal Diary’s Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man. Fans of awful Sid and Marty Krofft shows may be interested to know that Rhino Handmade offers deluxe collector’s editions of The Bugaloos and Lidsville. I’m a Sigmund and The Sea Monsters guy myself.

New Apple Software Allows Users

New Apple Software Allows Users To Create Crap, Music

Along with new baby ipods (which will probably actually drop
to $99 within the year), Apple yesterday also introduced a
new $50 audio recording program, “GarageBand”. To demonstrate,
Steve Jobs pulled John Mayer onto the Macworld stage to show
off some of the program’s features.
JG pointed
out that Jobs enlisted John Mayer because he’s half the price of Dave Matthews.
Which would make Jason Mraz exactly half the price
of John Mayer. But anyway. Optimists will point out that GarageBand will make
it easier than ever before for some young kid in his bedroom in Duluth to record some
stuff that will change the face of music forever. I would like to point out that
Garageband will make it easier for every yinyang you know to start bugging
you to listen to their crappy sub-Moby technoloop compositions.

Peefork is reporting on the limited vinyl re-release Enon’s On Hold.
Twas originally released as a short-run CDR in 2001. Limited to 500 w/ a bonus 7-inch, it’ll cost you 13 Euros.
Here.

The Divine Comedy (Neil Hannon)

The Divine Comedy (Neil Hannon) has finished up his new
record, Absent Friends, which should see release
on March 29th. Well, in the UK at least. Amazonk’s $35
price tag do not smell like a domestical price to me.

The next day, March 30th, should find Good News For People Who Love Bad News, Modest Mouse’s
new one, on your record store shelf.

Is it January already? murmur reminds us
that Benjy Gibby and the Cube Death For Cattie are on Kilborn on the 19th. Also, don’t forget Tha Shinzz on
Letterman on the 13th.

Also, nice: Another Big Ocean by Castle Oldchair.
