OK, that new Matt Pond

OK, that new Matt Pond EP: Out
in January, titled Winter Songs. Songs are:
- Snow Day (new)
- Winterlong (Neil Young)
- I Want To See The Bright Lights (Richard & Linda Thompson)
- Holiday Road (Lindsay Buckingham)
- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (Neutral Milk Hotel)
Plus two instrumentals.

So, after hearing those Sufjan
Christmas
albums that float around the P2Ps, I must admit that the guy could
probably sing pretty much any goddamn song and make it sound
incredible.

Columbus: Hedwig herself, John Cameron Mitchell, will be appearing
tonight at Studio 35
for a midnight showing of “Hedwig and The Angry Inch” with
a Q & A to follow. He’s also DJ-ing at “Club Versace
@ Fabric” (don’t ask) tonight.

Via doa: As a result

Via doa: As a result of the
“excessive prices” of bootlegs, Neutral Milk Hotel is
putting together a two-volume set of early material, including the
self-released cassettes, live performances, and unreleased recordings.
Orange Twin, the label run by Elf Power members to raise funds for land
preservation, will release the compilation, which does not have an
official release date yet.

A new Iron & Wine EP’s out.
Tracks:
1. Passing Afternoon
2. Communion Cups and Someone’s Coat (new)
3. Dearest Forsaken (live on KCRW)

Brendan Benson’s new one is
done, and
should be out in early ‘05 on V2, I
think.

And don’t go expecting to hear the Velvety Underground sounds of the new Black Lipstick record, Sincererly, Black Lipstick, next week. It’s been pushed back to January.

Thoroughly decent indie rock from Chin Up Chin Up on this
track:

Opera

John Peel has died. Sad

John Peel has died. Sad news, but he leaves behind a great legacy of pointing out good music to the world. Coolfer has a link to this list, meticulously tracking all of the Peel Sessions since 1992. I say go out and pick up a Peel Session disc today in John’s honor. The Frank Black/Teenage Fanclub disc is a personal favorite of mine.

Music For Robots has a nice mp3 up of Buckner covering Pavement’s “Here”. Go check it out.

I keep forgetting to mention that lhb dug up this cover of the Mountain Goats doing Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back In Town” that segues into “Ignition (Remix)”. It struck me as incredibly odd, only in that that very segue happens on an almost daily basis as we listen to music at work. Really, you should see my full iTunes purchasing record, it’s ridiculous: R Kelly, Thin Lizzy, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Rush, Van Halen, and more.

I guess I’ll have to

I guess I’ll have to start calling them by their new name at some point, so here goes: dios malos have a new EP, currently only available on tour. The tracklist (I think) is “Starting Five (Radio Edit)”, “Everyday” (tagged as ‘unreleased’, which is weird considering it appeared on Los Arboles, but then again, maybe it’s the alternate version that been floating around the P2Ps for a while), and a cover of Beck’s “Asshole”. Startime says it will probably be available at the shops some time in the near future.

Hey, the Futureheads Yahoo Group has been updated with tracks of their live set in Amsterdam 2003.

The Nada Surf Election Night show in Columbus has been confirmed over at Donewaiting, but note it’s going to be an acoustic set with Matthew and Ira, not a full-on electricky show.

One more thing. If Bishop Allen played in the Polyvinyl showcase at CMJ (and they did), then that must mean…

KEXP has posted a bunch

KEXP has posted a bunch of their in-studio sessions from CMJ. The Arcade Fire, Buckner, The Decemberists, Sufjan, Ted Leo, and many more.

Server logs showed that someone was searching for “Devendra + Banhart + Neutral + Milk + Hotel + Radio + Sessions”…does such a thing exist? Let me know if you find out anything.

Anders Parker, formerly Varnaline, has released his new record. I had no idea (so, thanks jon). You can stream tracks over at the Baryon Records site.

Tim found out that David Berman is recording a new album next month. (and has a new book too).

Also:

You know you so want this:

Another track from that new

Another track from that new Prosaics disc, this time an “official” one from Matador:

::: Teeth :::

Matt Pond is wrapping up a new EP for January release. No official tracklist yet, but it’s said to be “one original, two instrumentals, and four covers”.

The new Ted Leo is out today. I like it and everything, but judging from the all the gushing I’m reading everywhere, I’ve come to realize that I must be the only person in the world who thinks Tyranny Of Distance is his best work. Anyway, here’s “Me and Mia” for the 4 people out there who haven’t heard it yet:

::: Me and Mia :::

Also, that Kevin Tihista record has grown on me immensely in the past few days.

Okkervil River’s new EP, Sleep

Okkervil River’s new EP, Sleep and Wake-Up Songs, will be out Nov. 2nd. It’s a combo of outtakes from the River Of Golden Dreams sessions, stuff from their Acuarela split with Julie Doiron, plus all-new stuff.

Recording of the new EP was helped along by JG of The Minus Story, who recently completed their new Heaven and Hell EP, out early ‘05.

Anybody else have an EP coming out, you may ax? Well, Oneida’s got one out on Ace Fu at the end of November; it’s Nice./Splittin’ Peaches.

And, not one to be left behind, Mr. Damien Jurado will see his new EP, Just In Time For Something, released Nov. 2nd. He recorded the EP live, using an old reel-to-reel, and some thrift-store tape he ran across. Seems like it should sound awesome. His new full length, On My Way To Absence, will be out sometime in ‘05.

And hey, Ending East (look to the upper-right corner of their page) has been kind enough to share with us a track from that new Prosaics EP. It’s the best track on the disc, btw, “Failure”.

Stereogum
pointed out
that Domino
is streaming
a new CRCR track each day through the end of
the month
.

And speaking of streaming, stream the new Pinback here.

On a non-music note, I would just like to thank the Philips Corporation, who manufacture the DVP642 DVD player, which plays any possible region and/or video format you throw at it. Also, I’d like to thank the inventor of BitTorrent, and plus also, thank you, BBC, for Spaced, one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen.

The recording for the new

The recording for the new Spoon record, due out
next year, is done, and is now going into mixing. Here’s the mostly-final tracklist:

The infinite pet
The two sides of monsieur valentine
The delicate place
Was it you?
My mathematical mind
I turn my camera on
sister jack
I summon you
merchants of soul
The beast and dragon adored
They never got you

The record has, at different times, been referred to as both The Beast And Dragon Are Adored or Romeo’s Apprentice. We have exclusive artist’s renderings of both:

If you really liked that first Interpol record, but aren’t too keen on the new one, maybe instead you should pick up that new Prosaics disc.

And hey Columbus, it’s a big week for shows coming up. Should be something to satisfy both dyed-in-the-wool indie rockers and also Sorority Girls (though the line between those two grows fuzzier every day):

10/13 - Death Cab/Travis Morrison @ Newport
10/14 - Explosions In The Sky/Adem @ Wexner
10/15 - Black Heart Procession/Enon @ Lil Bros
10/16 - Interpol/Secret Machines @ Newport
10/17 - Decemberists @ Lil Bros
10/18 - Crooked Fingers @ Bernies
10/19 - Blonde Redhead @ Lil Bros
10/21 - GBV @ Alrosa
