Bye Three Gut

Great, great farewell feature on Three Gut over at Exclaim. Includes a swell family portrait, and also parting thoughts from Lisa Moran, Bry Webb (Constantines), Gentleman Reg, Aaron Riches, and Jim Guthrie.

Kathryn points out that the newish Okkervil River t-shirt designs are kinda nice.

Kaleb sent over this link, to a demo of some new Pedro the Lion stuff:

::: The Devil Is Beating His Wife (demo) :::

Kaleb also hooked me up with some stuff from Don’s Mobile Barbers (UK), who conjure up some nice, thick poppy stuff.

::: The Language You Are Using Now :::
::: Euros and Dollars :::

Gene Defcon

You may disagree wholly, but I think *everyone* could use a little Gene Defcon in their life. The new record is Throw Up and Die on Retard Disco, and this track puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it. And what more do you need, really?

Get Him Eat Him’s Geography Cones

I know there are a crapload of new releases today, but I would be totally remiss if I didn’t specifically point out that Get Him Eat Him’s Geography Cones just came out. I’ve been listening to it for awhile now, and let me tell you: their style of jerky twitchy indie-rock would make a CRACK3D MACH1N3 proud. Good stuff.

::: Mumble Mumble :::

::: Not Not Nervous (demo vrsn) :::

(and keep your eyes peeled over at It’s Meaningless dot com next week, to check out GHEH’s awesome contribution to that project.)

Holopaw – Curious

Yep, that new Holopaw record is still slated to come out next month, there just doesn’t seem to be much press about it. Hmm. Anyway, here’s a track (I know the link doesn’t work, but I just betcha it will start working by, like, later today).

::: Curious :::

My Mean Magpie, as he so often does, has turned up some of his old soundboard recordings. This time it’s Sufjan from Dec. 2001.

Here are a few mp3s from Minus Story’s No Rest For Ghosts, which I’m very excited about, and which will be out October 11th on Jagjaguwar.

::: Knocking On Your Head :::
::: Little Wet Head :::

They’re on tour right now, so go catch ‘em if you can. And if you didn’t pick up their Heaven and Hell EP back in March, you better get on that. Actually, I am remiss for forgetting to ever add that one to the left sidebar over there, doh!

This week at It’s Meaningless dot com: tracks from Orbit Service and John Guilt.

Hey, last chance: if you want to come to the Unbunny performance tonight, email me by 5. Also playing are Jerry DeCicca (Black Swans), Chris Forbes (Orchestraville), and, if our luck holds out, Viking Moses.

Last Of The Blacksmiths, Portastatic

I recently got the s/t album from San Francisco’s Last Of The Blacksmiths, and it’s some really nice quiety, pretty stuff. Here is my favorite track from the disc (which I actually first heard on one of kaleb’s always-great mixes):

::: Grass Blade :::

There’s 3 more tracks available on their Songs page, go check ‘em out. And if’n you like ‘em, you can pick up their disc here.

It’s almost week 4 now, and I forgot to mention that it’s week 3 of posting over at kaleb’s Magnetic Fields tribute site. This week’s songs are by Darryl Blood and Levi Fuller.

How about a track from the upcoming Portastatic record, Bright Ideas:

:::I Wanna Know Girls :::

And here’s a second mp3 from the New Pornies’s Twin Cinema:

:::Use It :::

And if you dug on that Fruit Bats track the other day, you might want to go ahead and stream the whole album.

Field Music

Memphis IndustriesField Music is another band that has no problem liking that 80’s sound, and I, for one, do not have a problem with that.

Silver Jews, Long Winters, Joggers, New Pornos, Destroyer

StG has a new Silver Jews track up, from the upcoming Tanglewood Numbers. Carl Wilson has some Berman-related thoughts to share, too.

For those that have been waiting for some Long Winters tour dates, wait no more; you’ll get them in September. With Keane (those guys with the song with the piano).

The Joggers have a few songs posted (technically, “streaming”, nyah nyah!) from their upcoming record, With A Cape And Cane.

Pre-order the New Pornographers’ Twin Cinema for $10, and get a limited one-sided 7″ with an unreleased NPs song. I’m gonna have to pre-order, just in case it’s a Bejar one.

Adam sent me a note telling me that The Caribbean was doing a short tour. The tour was so short, in fact, that due in no small part to my ability to procrastinate, there are only 2 dates left to tell you about:

Tues., July 19: In-store, Sea Level Records, Los Angeles, CA
Wed., July 20: Knitting Factory, Los Angeles, CA

Their new record, Plastic Explosives, will be out at some point in
the future on Home Tapes. And if
you’ve never heard the Caribbean, here’s the title track from their last one, William Of Orange.

Oh, and Popsheep has more of those old Destroyer tracks.

JV, Portastatic, The Double

Sounds like a great great pair-up to me: JV is hooking up with Portastatic for Fall dates, starting September 30. And, in a surprise move, I’m not even gonna bellyache that none of those shows are anywhere near here.

Also, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: that Pixel Revolt really grows on you. JV’s done some fine work there. Also, some parts of it make the girls cry. Like seriously physically cry. Oh, yeah, he’s good.

The first mp3 from The Double’s Loose In The Air has been posted over at Matador. I’m not sure how you’re gonna feel about it, but it’s somehow just exactly what I needed to hear this morning:

Devendra Banhart, Nada Surf, Xiu Xiu, Kickball, GHEH

Stream that new Devendra Banhart. Or, if you’re feeling particularly ornery, go download the leaked version.

Barsuk has put up a track from the upcoming Nada Surf record, The Weight Is A Gift. You can download the song “Do It Again” (not a cover of the Steely Dan song (I know, I’m disappointed too)) right here. Or, if you’re feeling particularly ornery…

Hey, Tiny Mixtapes has all the specifics the Sept. 12th Deluxe Goo re-release.

New Xiu Xiu site. Neat.

Kickball expect to have their new album, ABCDEFGHIJKickball, ready in time for their August tour with Mt.Gigantic.

Get Him Eat Him have quite a few shows lined up for the next few weeks, and I’m not sure, but they still might need help booking shows/instores/house parties in Boise, Little Rock, Seattle, Denver, Austin, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. Drop a line to matt@gethimeathim.com if you can help out. Or just drop him a line to let him know where to get a good sandwich.

Also note that GHEH have a very limited handmade Tour EP with them (The Rude Reach); you should probably grab one of those if you get a chance.

Herman Dune and Stuff

It’s Week 2 over at kaleb’s Magnetic Fields Tribute site, which means two new songs. This week it’s Grumpy Bear doing “Smoke and Mirrors”, and Everything Is Fine doing “The Dreaming Moon”.

The video for Herman Dune’s “Not On Top”. Thanks to BMR for the tip-off. And note that BMR’s going out on the road soon (with Jason Anderson):

8-12 // Palmer, Warren’s Pad
8-13 // Easthampton, Flywheel
8-14 // Brattleboro, VT, Common Ground

8-15 // Keene, NH (venue TBD)
8-16 // Greenfield, MA (venue TBD)
8-17 // Montague, Montague Bookmill
8-22 // Portsmouth, NH, The Red Door (w/ Barn Burning,
Gregg Porter)(no Jason Anderson)

Are You Familiar just posted another one by The Paper Cranes that you should probably check out, plus also 2 tracks from The Two Koreas, which are also v. good. Go check ‘em out.

Secretly Canadian signed Austin’s I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness.

Listen to NPR’s Weekend Edition this Sunday, and you’ll get to hear an interview with Ben and Steve, aka the brothers from different mothers of the Robbers On High Street.

New Yorkers, note that there’s a John Guilt solo/acoustic show tomorrow night at the Trash Bar. It’s 7 bucks cover, but there’s open bar from 9-10.
