El Perro Del Mar

Aw, I just love El Perro Del Mar. Ever since that 2004 split with Jens Lekman, I’ve loved El Perro. Did you know her self-titled album will finally see release outside of Sweden on April 10th, courtesy of Memphis Industries? Of course, that only covers the UK and Europe, so US: you’re still screwed. Ah well, at least we have mp3s, including this one, which I can’t get enough of:

::: God Knows (You Gotta Give To Get) :::

Memphis also recently signed The Pipettes, and on March 27th, will be releasing their new single (which I’ve got on ‘Repeat’). It’s called “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me”, and much like the The Envelopes‘ “Free Jazz”, its existence as a salable single prevents me from posting it as an mp3. But there’s always Myspace.

In non-Memphis Industries female artist news, Ashtmatic Kitty has posted an mp3 from the upcoming Half-Handed Cloud record, Halos & Lassos, out March 7th. In my opinion, this is the best HHC album yet.

::: Feed Your Sheep A Burning Lamp :::

I think it must be the case that on every Centro-Matic record, there’s one track that just blows me away. On the last one, it was Flashes and Cables, and from the new one, Fort Recovery (out 3/7 on Misra), it’s this one:

::: Calling Thermatico :::

That fat fucking low-end whacks you right upside the head. I love it.

Fiery Furnaces Bitter Tea - It’s All Online, Basically

Mp3 Bloggers love to tear each other a new asshole whenever someone posts an excessive amount of tracks from a single album. But who gets the new asshole when all the tracks are spread out across a bunch of different blogs all at once? Below, you’ll find links to 9 10 of the 14 tracks from the Fiery Furnaces‘ upcoming Bitter Tea.

1. In My Little Thatched Hut (Sixeyes)
2. I’m in No Mood (Sixeyes)

3. Black-hearted Boy (Rawkblog Dot Blogspot)
4. Bitter Tea (Checkboard Chimes Dot Blogspot)
5. Teach Me Sweetheart (Stereogum)

6. Waiting to Know You (Rawkblog Dot Blogspot)

7. The Vietnamese Telephone Ministry
8. Oh Sweet Woods

9. Borneo (Blown By The Wind Dot Blogspot)
10. Police Sweater Blood Vow (Fluxblog)

11. Nevers (Gramophone)
12. Benton Harbor Blues (Pitchers Of Silence Dot Blogspot)
13. Whistle Rhapsody?
14. Benton Harbor Blues Again

Is this what happens when a band doesn’t have a Marketing/PR Agent doling out “official” mp3s? Or is this just what we should expect to see more and more of, now that there are approximately nine-billion, six-hundred eighty million, four-hundred fifty-two thousand, six-hundred and ninety-two Mp3 Blogs?

(Also, I wonder if the 4 tracks that didn’t get posted are just the unlistenable noisy tracks?)

A Bunch Of Beatniks Riding A Rocket

You just might want to spend your afternoon poring through all the mp3s available here, courtesy of A Bunch Of Beatniks Riding A Rocket. Tons of stuff there. Tons. And it’s mostly all just good ol’ fashioned indiepop (with some jangle, some twee, some (ahem) rap, and etc). I’ve got no specific recommendations, so go forth and spelunk for yourself; I’m sure you’re bound to find something you dig.

Califone, Billy Bragg, Destroyer’s Rubies

Tomorrow’s the first time in a long time that you *need* to get down to the record store. But besides the big new titles that we all know are out tomorrow, don’t forget there are a few decent reissues as well, including Thrill Jockey’s re- of Califone’s first record, Roomsound. If you’re feelin’ all protesty, there are 2 Phil Ochs reissues out on Collector’s Choice/Hepcat (All The News That’s Fit To Sing and I Ain’t Marching Anymore). And if you’re feeling protesty, but in a “Bollocks to Thatcher England!” sort of way, remember that all those mega double-disc Billy Bragg Yep Roc reissues are out tomorrow as well.

Okay, so I managed to avoid reminding you *explicitly* that Destroyer’s Rubies is out tomorrow, but I would be remiss if I didn’t point out Merge’s “Deface Destroyer” contest.

I’ve come up with some doozies already.

*Also of note: Matt LeMay comes out of retirement to review D’s Rs for the ‘Fork.

Band Of Horses, Essex Green

We’ve been listening to the demo-y versions of most of those Band of Horses songs for nigh on a year, but the real deal’s done, and will be out before you know it (or, 3/21). Here’s the first mp3 from Everything All The Time:

::: The Funeral :::

And here’s a track from the new Essex Green record, Cannibal Sea, also out 3/21 (on Merge, natch). This is probably my favorite Essex Green song I have ever heard. Good stuff:

::: Don’t Know Why (You Stay) :::

Rubber Traits

Check out the video for Why?’s “Rubber Traits”, the lead-off track for the upcoming Rubber Traits EP, out 2/28 on Anticon. And you could always just download the mp3, of course.

About 3 weeks ago, I pointed out the single Free Jazz by (mostly) Swedish band Envelopes. I mentioned it then because I just couldn’t stop listening to it. I mention it again now because, well, I just can’t stop listening to it, PLUS, it’s now actually available for purchase. I’m telling you, go here and click on “Free Jazz”. Is good.

Lucky SXSW-ers will get a chance to see Envelopes at this year’s fest, and lucky NYC-ers will actually get a chance too, as Envelopes are playing exactly one US show outside of SXSW, and it’s 3/14 at the Mercury Lounge.

I can’t get enough of that new Kelley Stoltz record, Below The Branches, and now, everyone can give it a listen, thanks to this free album stream from VPRO.

The ever-vigilant BMR tracked that stream down. BMR has a new disc coming out soon, in the form of a split CD on Moonpalace Records with Spanish (Basque, actually) musician Joseba Irazoki. More details as they come.

Yeltsin, Early Destroyer, Final Fantasy

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin reviewed on Pitchfork today. So, now, will you people go buy the record?

Popsheep has 3 tracks up from this old cassette release by some guy who had once had these Ideas For Songs.

Final Fantasy’s new record, He Poos Clouds (”the D & D album”) is finished, and should be out Mid-April, on Blocks (and Tomlab, too, I imagine).

Tracklist:

Arctic Circle
He Poos Clouds
This Lamb Sells Condos
If I Were A Carp
—>
I’m Afraid Of Japan
Song Song Song
Many Lives -> 49 MP
Do You Love?
The Pooka Sings

Owen’s also got an EP in the works for later in the year, featuring songs that didn’t necessarily fit with the theme of HPC.

Also, Econoculture just did an interview with Owen; check it out here.

Quasi

Here’s another track from Quasi’s new one, out 3/21. It’s a good ‘un; a big, shambling piano-plunker in classic Quasi style:

::: The Rhino :::

Alright, I’ve officially decided that that Sunset Rubdown track that Popsheep posted the other day has qualified as “totally awesome.” And the Skatterbrain blog offers up a different SR track, this of unknown origin (to me), called “We Got Broken Eyes.” The new Sunset Rubdown full-length, They Took A Vote and Said No Shut Up I Am Dreaming, is out on Absolutely Kosher on May 2nd.

Note also that next month, Abs Kosh will be releasing Dear John, the new record by herky-jerky SF popsters Ex-Boyfriends. You can check out a track right here.

Certainly, you’re sick of my Destroyer posts by now. But are you sick of that “European Oils” mp3 you’ve downloaded yet? How about that one for “Painter In Your Pocket”? If so, then get thee over to Merge forthwith and start streaming Destroyer’s Rubies in its entirety. Or just send your favorite Music Lover a Destroyer Valentine.

Danielson: A Family Movie

The trailer for the new Danielson documentary is now available online. Danielson: A Family Movie is slated to premiere at SXSW in March, but there’s a sneak preview at the SF Independent Film Festival tonight. The trailer’s scored by the track “Did I Step On Your Trumpet,” which is now streaming over at the Danielson Myspace page. The new record, Ships is out in May on Secretly Canadian.
