Simon Joyner, Frightened Rabbit, Human Television

I’ve been on that Jagjaguwar page a hundred times, and a hundred times, my eyes have just glossed over those Simon Joyner records on there. It took Said The Gramophone posting a track from the new Joyner singles collection, Beautiful Losers, for me to take notice.

I was just putzing around on Insound and discovered there was a new Black Mountain 7″ just out on Suicide Squeeze. Both tracks are brand new; “Stormy High” b/w “Voices.” 2,000 copies, marble vinyl, and it’s a mere four bucks, fourteen cents at Insound.

The Divine Comedy has a new record, Victory For The Comic Muse, out in June on Parlophone.

Frightened RabbitSo, I caught this post over at Music For Robots the other day, and I was like GOD. DAMN. Frightened Rabbit, that’s what they’re called. And the song is “Go Go Girls,” and either it’s totally refreshing and original, or it’s completely derivative and comfortable, but for whatever the reason, GOD. DAMN.

Normally I wouldn’t just download and repost a track in this way, but I want to keep perpetuatin’ it to make sure this FR stuff shows up prominently in those mp3 aggregators.

Vagrant-Time just announced availability of a new iTunes-only dios malos EP. No word yet on how many times they use the words “pot”, “marijuana”, “weed”, “bud”, “bammy”, “buddha”, or “fatty” on the EP. Probably a lot.

There’s a new Human Television record out, Look At Who You’re Talking To, and everyone’s pointing out, just like they did a few years back, that Human Television are *totally* 80’s. Thing is, it’s the greatest kind of 80’s: it’s that bouncy janglepop sound that echoes from Athens, Georgia all the way down to New Zealand. I like.

48 Catbird Mixes In The Can

The First 48

The new mix is up. Hopefully, you’re already checkin’ it out. This actually marks the first time ever that we’ve missed that first-of-the-month artwork deadline, and had to post up a ‘placeholder’ banner. But there is a real banner a’comin’, just a little bit late.

Know what else? This month also marks the 48th Catbirdseat Monthly Mix. 4 years, sheesh. That’s a mix a month since May of ‘02. But hey, wait a second- May ‘02 to May ‘06…doesn’t that make 49 mixes? No, because June ‘02 got skipped, out of pure laziness. Hey, it’s not like there were any readers back then or anything.

Out of curiosity, I went back through to see which bands were the most frequently appearing, and well, there were no real surprises:

Catbird Mix CDs
1st Place- 8 mixes: (tie)
Destroyer
Spoon

2nd Place- 7 mixes: (tie)
Unbunny
John Vanderslice

3rd Place- 6 mixes: (tie)
Robbers On High Street
Wolf Parade

All these mixes ultimately get archived onto CD, did you know that? They even get a nice little case with the artwork and everything, and then they get filed away back in the media closet. And the thing is, I was thinking for a long time that it would be really cool to do a big giveaway, so that I could get rid of all these things. But then I realized that that was, like, totally illegal. Very bad idea.

So, I guess all I can really say is that I hope you’ve enjoyed these past 48. Y’all keep tunin’ in, and I’ll keep postin’ em.

Still, 48 mixes…Sheesh.
